How to use the time calculator
- Time between: enter a start and end time to see the hours and minutes between them. Add an unpaid break to get the hours actually worked. If the end time is earlier than the start, we treat it as the next day, which is right for night shifts.
- Add or subtract: start from a clock time and add or take away hours and minutes. Useful for working out when a 3 hour 45 minute bake finishes, or what time to leave.
- Add up hours: paste a list of times worked, one per line, to total a week's timesheet.
Converting minutes to decimal hours
Payroll and invoices often need hours as decimals rather than hours and minutes. Divide the minutes by 60: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25 and 45 minutes is 0.75. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 6 | 0.10 |
| 10 | 0.17 |
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 20 | 0.33 |
| 30 | 0.50 |
| 40 | 0.67 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
| 50 | 0.83 |
Example timesheet: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30 minute unpaid lunch is 8 hours of work, or 8.00 decimal hours.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours between two times?
Subtract the start time from the end time. If the end time is earlier, add 24 hours because it is the next day. Then take off any unpaid break. The calculator above does this for you.
How many hours is 9 to 5?
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours. With a 30 minute unpaid lunch it is 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 decimal hours.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. For example 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, so 6 hours 45 minutes is 6.75 hours.
Does the calculator work for overnight shifts?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it is treated as the next day, so 10 PM to 6 AM shows 8 hours.
Is this time calculator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign up and nothing you enter leaves your browser.
