Hair growth calculator: how long to grow my hair?

Hair grows about half an inch a month on average, but trims and your own growth speed change the math. Enter where you are and where you want to be, and we will map out the months ahead.

Measure a dry section from scalp to tip at the back.
Bra strap length is about 16 to 18 inches.

How fast does hair grow?

Scalp hair grows about half an inch, or 1.25 centimeters, a month on average. That adds up to roughly six inches a year. Some people grow closer to a third of an inch a month and others nearer two thirds, depending on genetics, age, hormones and overall health. Growth is usually fastest from your teens to your thirties and slows a little after that.

Hair grows in cycles. Each strand spends two to seven years in the growing phase, then rests and sheds. The length of your growing phase sets your terminal length, the longest your hair can reach before it naturally falls out. That is why some people can grow hair to the waist and others find it stalls around the shoulders.

How the calculator works

  1. Growth per month. Pick slow, average or fast. If you have measured your own growth over a few months, choose the closest option.
  2. Trim loss. We spread each trim across the weeks between cuts. A quarter inch every 12 weeks costs you about 0.08 inches a month.
  3. Net growth. Growth minus trim loss is the real gain each month.
  4. Time to goal. The gap between your current and goal length divided by net growth gives the months, and we turn that into a target date and a timeline.

Tips to keep the length you grow

You can't change your natural growth speed much, but you can stop losing length to breakage. Keep heat styling to a minimum, detangle gently from the ends up, sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase and use a leave in conditioner on the lengths. Small, regular trims of an eighth to a quarter inch remove split ends before they travel up the strand, so they save length in the long run.

Measure your own rate. Mark a strand with a tiny dot of colored hair chalk at the root, or photograph your parting next to a ruler after coloring. Measure again in six weeks and you will know your real growth speed.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to grow hair 6 inches?
At the average rate of half an inch a month, six inches takes about a year with no trims. With a quarter inch trim every 12 weeks, plan on about 13 months.
Does trimming make hair grow faster?
No. Growth happens at the scalp, so trims don't speed it up. They do remove split ends before they break further up, which helps you keep more of the length you grow.
How much does hair grow in a month?
About half an inch, or 1.25 centimeters, on average. Most people fall somewhere between a third of an inch and two thirds of an inch.
Why has my hair stopped growing past a certain length?
It is usually breakage at the ends or a short growing phase. Protect the ends with gentle care and fewer hot tools. If you notice sudden shedding, speak to a doctor or dermatologist.
Is this hair growth calculator free?
Yes. It is free, works in inches or centimeters and nothing you enter leaves your browser.
