How much should you tip at a hair salon?
In the United States and Canada, the standard salon tip is 20 percent of the service price for good service, 15 percent if it was just fine, and 25 percent or more when your stylist goes above and beyond. So an 80 dollar color deserves about 16 dollars, and a 200 dollar balayage about 40. Tips are an important part of how stylists, colorists and nail techs are paid, which is why they are expected rather than optional.
Outside North America it is a different story. In the UK and Ireland, tipping is appreciated but not required, and 10 percent is generous. Across most of Europe, service is built into prices and people round up. In Australia and New Zealand, salon staff are paid a full wage, so tips are only for truly exceptional work.

Do you tip the salon owner?
Old etiquette said you don't tip an owner, because they keep the profit from your service. That rule has faded. Most owners still cut hair to pay the bills, and most clients now tip them just like any other stylist. If you are unsure, tipping is never the wrong choice.

Speak up before you pay, kindly and specifically. Most salons would rather fix a haircut or color than lose a client, and many offer a free correction within a week or two.
