The golden rule of skincare order

Apply your products from the thinnest to the thickest texture, and from water based to oil based. Thin, watery serums can't get through a heavy cream, so they go on first. Oils and occlusive creams go on last to seal everything in. In the morning, sunscreen is always the final step, because anything you put on top of it can dilute the protection.

Morning vs night routine

Your morning routine protects: antioxidants like vitamin C help defend against pollution and boost your sunscreen. Your night routine repairs: this is when retinol and exfoliating acids do their best work, since many are broken down by sunlight and your skin renews itself overnight.

Skincare ingredients you shouldn't mix

Retinol and exfoliating acids such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid are both strong. Using them together on the same night often leads to redness, peeling and a damaged skin barrier, so alternate them on different nights. Vitamin C works best in the morning, while retinol belongs at night. Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are gentle team players and pair well with almost everything.

Introduce one new product at a time. Give each new active two to three weeks before adding another. If your skin reacts, you will know exactly which product caused it.

How long to wait between skincare steps

For most products, a minute is enough for each layer to settle. Give actives like vitamin C or retinol a little longer, and let sunscreen set for a few minutes before makeup. There is no need to wait twenty minutes between every step, which was an old rule for early vitamin C formulas.

Once your routine is sorted, make sure your products are still fresh with the makeup and skincare expiry checker, find your best shades with the skin undertone quiz, and read our complete morning and night skincare guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct order to apply skincare?
Cleanser, toner, serums from thinnest to thickest, eye cream, moisturizer, then face oil at night or sunscreen in the morning.
Should I apply serum before or after moisturizer?
Before. Serums are thinner and packed with active ingredients, so they go on clean skin first and moisturizer seals them in.
Can I use retinol and vitamin C together?
It is easiest to use vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. That way each works at its best and you avoid irritation.
Does sunscreen go before or after moisturizer?
After. Sunscreen is always the last step of your morning skincare routine, before any makeup.
Is this skincare routine builder free?
