How to choose the right rug size
A well sized rug makes a room feel pulled together, while one that is too small looks like a bath mat floating in the middle of the floor. The right size depends on three things: the room, the furniture it needs to anchor, and the border of bare floor you leave around it. The calculator combines all three and recommends a standard size you can actually buy.

In most living rooms, the front legs layout is the sweet spot. It connects the sofa and chairs into one conversation area without needing an oversized rug. Whatever you choose, the rug should be at least as long as your sofa, ideally with 6 inches spare at each end.
Bedroom rug size guide
Place the rug crosswise under the bottom two thirds of the bed, starting just in front of the nightstands. You want at least 18 inches of rug on each side of the bed, so the first step in the morning lands on something soft.

Dining room rug size guide
Measure your table and add 24 inches on every side. That gives chairs room to slide back without catching on the edge. A 72 by 40 inch table therefore needs a rug of at least 120 by 88 inches, which makes 8 x 10 feet the smallest standard size that works.
How much floor should show around a rug?
Designers usually leave 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Less than that and the rug looks like wall to wall carpet that didn't quite fit; much more and it looks small. In narrow rooms, keep the border even on both long sides.
